It publishes no founding year, headquarters or team size, so ask for a registration number, the signing entity and evidence of immersive work on a real device.

Headset, phone or browser: pick the target before you pick the vendor
The hardware decision sets the software budget, and most buyers make it last. Make it first, in writing: everything downstream inherits it.
A standalone headset is a mobile device with a mobile chip and a mobile thermal budget. You write to a frame budget against the display refresh rate, commonly 72 or 90 frames per second, and to draw-call and triangle ceilings that look absurd to anyone who has only built for a desktop. A tethered PC headset gives the budget back and takes away mobility, at a workstation per user.
Apple Vision Pro raises fidelity per user and cost per user together, and changes what your software may see. Apple's enterprise application programming interfaces for visionOS put main camera access behind a managed entitlement issued to your organisation, so a computer vision feature that is trivial on a phone becomes a paperwork question first.
Phone augmented reality on ARKit and ARCore skips the fleet entirely, at the cost of hands-free operation. WebXR, the World Wide Web Consortium's browser standard, opens from a link: no store, no review queue, no installation, a lower performance ceiling, and often the right trade for a configurator or a refresher module.
Two engine facts belong in the budget rather than in a preference argument. OpenXR is the cross-vendor runtime standard from the Khronos Group, so a build targeting it stays portable instead of being welded to one vendor's software development kit. Ask for it by name. Unity withdrew its proposed Runtime Fee in September 2024 and returned to seat-based subscriptions, while Epic's published Unreal Engine terms charge a five percent royalty on gross revenue above the first million dollars per product for products distributed to the public.
Why enterprise AR and VR dies at adoption, not at build
The build is visible, so it gets the attention. The rollout is invisible until it fails.
A pilot with twenty users tells you almost nothing about a rollout to two thousand. The volunteers wanted to be there. They were fitted by the person who built the application and ran it once, on a full battery, in a quiet room, with the trainer beside them. None of that survives a second shift on a Thursday.
What breaks at scale is mundane and almost never in scope. Who owns the headsets and who charges them, given that active use runs to roughly a couple of hours per charge. Who wipes the facial interface between users. Who resets the play boundary when the room is rearranged. Who pushes a two gigabyte update to two hundred devices over site Wi-Fi without taking the network down. What a shared headset shows when the second person of the day puts it on, given that your single sign-on was designed for a laptop belonging to one named human. Device management tools exist for this, ArborXR and ManageXR among them, and the licence and the labour belong in the first budget.
Then the measurement problem, which quietly kills more programmes than motion sickness ever has. If a module cannot post an xAPI statement into your Learning Record Store, your compliance team treats it as training that did not happen, and the safety manager keeps the classroom session on the calendar anyway. Now you pay for both. Against the Kirkpatrick model a pilot measures level one, whether people liked it, while the budget was approved on level three, whether behaviour changed on the floor. The market in 2026
The sizing figures are estimates and the houses disagree. Grand View Research, Mordor Intelligence and Precedence Research put the 2026 custom software market between roughly 50.9 and 74 billion dollars, growth clustering between 17 and 23 percent. Grand View Research puts enterprise software above 60 percent of that market, cloud at 57 percent and North America near 34 percent. Clutch lists more than 45,000 development agencies as listed at the time of writing.
Read the last number as a supply signal: filtering a directory to firms claiming augmented and virtual reality still leaves hundreds of names, because the claim costs nothing.
What it means for you rather than an analyst: your immersive budget is probably not coming from an information technology line. It comes from training, field service, marketing or capital projects, and it is judged against alternatives measured a different way. The classroom session your module replaces has a known cost per head and a known completion rate. Bring the same two numbers or the incumbent wins by default.

These bands come from Digital Heroes project history rather than a survey, and they exclude headsets, which you buy at the manufacturer's published retail pricing.
The two costs that go missing from quotes. In our own projects, moving content across, course material, engineering models and completion records, runs 10 to 25 percent of the build. Proposals hide it inside the phrase asset preparation, which is where an optimistic schedule dies.
On the builds Digital Heroes has priced, year two runs 15 to 20 percent of build cost annually: engine upgrades, headset operating system releases that change behaviour you relied on, store policy updates, and device management licences that renew whether or not anyone opened the application.
A worked example, from our own pricing. A manufacturer replaces a two-day classroom safety induction with a headset module across two plants. Discovery, task analysis with two trainers and a signed requirements document, $16,000. Converting forty assets from Revit and SolidWorks source into real-time meshes, $34,000. The Unity application on OpenXR, three scenarios with scoring and hints, $72,000. Reporting through xAPI into the existing Learning Record Store plus a supervisor dashboard, $28,000. What moves the price
Which device, and how many of them
A standalone headset and a tethered workstation are different engineering budgets for the same script, because the art is rebuilt for the smaller one. Quantity moves it again: twelve headsets is a cupboard, twelve hundred is a logistics programme with provisioning, spares and charging. A quote that does not name the device priced whichever one the estimator pictured.
Where the 3D content comes from
The line most often underestimated by an order of magnitude. A Revit or IFC building model, or a SolidWorks assembly, is built for accuracy rather than real-time rendering and arrives with more geometry than a mobile chip will ever draw. Somebody decimates it, retopologises the parts that matter, bakes detail into textures and ships it as glTF or USD. Count the assets before you accept a number.
Whether it must work offline, and on a shared device
Offline means local storage, a sync queue, conflict handling and a way to recover a session that ended when a battery did. Shared devices mean identity without a personal login. Both are cheap to design in, expensive to add later, and in a plant usually mandatory.
How it is distributed and who reviews it
Public store distribution puts your launch date on somebody else's calendar. Meta publishes Virtual Reality Checks a submission must pass, and Apple's App Store Review Guidelines apply to visionOS as everywhere else. Managed distribution to your own devices avoids the public queue but needs device management first. WebXR avoids review altogether.
Where these projects go wrong
The pilot that proved nothing. Twenty volunteers, near perfect completion, an enthusiastic write-up, and a rollout plan built on all of it. Then it meets shared devices, three shifts, a network that does not reach the far bay, and users who never asked for this. In our own project history, retrofitting device management, offline operation and shared-device identity after a successful pilot has run six to ten weeks and $28,000 to $60,000.
Computer-aided design dropped straight into the engine. The engineering model exists, so the assets look free. It loads, the frame rate falls into the forties, and within four minutes testers feel unwell and blame the technology rather than the geometry. Comfort is a frame budget problem before it is a preference, which is why Meta puts a comfort rating on store listings at all. In our own projects, retopology and a locomotion redesign afterwards have taken three to seven weeks and $18,000 to $45,000.
Store review discovered in the last fortnight. The build is finished, the launch date sits in a board pack, and the submission comes back against a requirement nobody read at the start. On our engagements, review and resubmission have cost two to five weeks with no engineering progress to show. Budget two review cycles from the start, and keep a browser fallback for the demonstration you already promised.
How to run the selection in two weeks
- Days 1 and 2. Write the task, not the technology. One page: who wears it, where they stand, for how long, what they must do afterwards that they cannot do now, and the number you will judge it by.
- Day 3. Settle the device question, or make each firm answer it in writing. Ask what they would recommend if the pilot were funded but the rollout were not, because the answer shows how they think about your risk.
- Days 4 to 7. Approach five firms of different shapes: an enterprise engineering firm, two product development companies, an immersive specialist and one offshore team, all sent the identical brief.
- Days 8 to 10. Ask for a build on your own device, not a video. Headset on, in a room like the real one. Watch the frame rate hold as you turn your head, and watch how somebody who has never worn one is fitted.
- Days 11 and 12. Force every quote into the same eight lines: discovery, asset conversion, application engineering, integration and reporting, deployment and device management, comfort and accessibility, distribution and review, first-year support.
- Days 13 and 14. Buy a paid discovery phase. Two to four weeks, priced separately, ending in a written specification, an asset inventory with polygon budgets, a comfort plan and a deployment plan you own outright whoever you hire next, including nobody.
What to ask before you sign
- Which device are we building for, and what is the frame budget on it? Worry if the answer is that it runs on everything, because the art gets built twice.
- Where do the 3D assets come from, and who converts the engineering models? Worry if the estimate assumes your Revit or SolidWorks files drop straight into the engine.
- What is your comfort plan, and which locomotion options ship in version one? Worry if comfort is tested at the end rather than treated as a design constraint.
- Which distribution channel will this use, and who owns the submission? Worry if nobody names Meta's Virtual Reality Checks or Apple's App Store Review Guidelines.
