How We Built the Rüted Formulas Shopify Store | Digital Heroes

Shopify Development product interface illustration for Ruted Formulas Client Case Study.
The short answer

This case study documents the Rüted Formulas Shopify storefront that Digital Heroes built. Rüted Formulas is a United States supplement brand selling two powders, SYNERGY at 59.99 dollars and REST at 27.99 dollars, plus a bundle and two zero priced gift records. Digital Heroes delivered the Shopify build: the theme, the collection structure, the custom cart drawer and the market gating that a regulated consumable needs.

Two powders, one bundle, and a frother that costs nothing

Rüted Formulas sells two supplements. That is the entire catalogue, and it is deliberate. SYNERGY is a daily powder built on creatine monohydrate and grass fed collagen, listed in the public product feed at 59.99 US dollars for 30 servings. REST is a night formula built on magnesium, ashwagandha, apigenin and L-theanine, listed at 27.99 US dollars for 30 servings. The homepage puts a name on the arrangement with the heading Two products. One system. and the storefront is built to hold that line.

The public product feed returns five records in total. Two are the powders. One is SYNERGY+REST, a bundle listed at 74.99 US dollars with two variants of its own. The last two are high powered frothers, both listed at 0.00, one of them attached to the section the homepage calls The Founder's Set. SYNERGY and REST each carry three variants. Add it up and a two product brand is pushing ten variant records through its cart.

The rest of the storefront is short on purpose. Navigation runs Home, Rest, Synergy, Info, Use, About Us, Contact Us and Blogs. The public collection list holds a Featured Products collection and a Home page collection. There is a single tag on the catalogue, sleep. Prices present in US dollars, and the payment marks on the page are American Express, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Mastercard, Union Pay and Visa. Visitors outside the selling markets are told the store is not available in their country before they get anywhere near a checkout.

The audience is not left to guesswork either. The h1 reads Built for the life you actually live. The benefit blocks are titled Muscle tone and Recovery, Hair and Nails, Less Brain Fog, and Gut lining. The about page is written in a first person kitchen table voice rather than as a corporate profile. Everything in the page structure says the same thing: one decision in the morning, one at night, and nothing else in the way.

The commerce problems a consumable creates

A supplement is not a t shirt. A 30 serving tub has a depletion date built into it, which means the business does not live in the first order. It lives in the second one. That single fact reaches into the theme in ways a clothing store never has to think about, and it is why a two product catalogue is not a small piece of work.

Variants that are not colours

Three variants on a 30 serving tub is not a size chart. Whatever the split is, a one time purchase against a repeating order, a single tub against a multi pack, each variant is a separate inventory record with its own stock count, its own price and its own path through the cart. Bundle two products that each carry three variants and you have a matrix that behaves like a much larger catalogue while looking like a two item store from the outside. Every variant is also one more place a price can be wrong.

A bundle that is a real product

Shopify gives you two ways to sell two things together. You can discount at the cart when the contents look right, or you can create a real product with its own SKU. Rüted Formulas has the second. SYNERGY+REST is a product record at 74.99 US dollars, not a rule waiting to fire. That version behaves correctly at checkout, in the customer's order history, in partial refunds and in reporting. It also carries an obligation: the bundle has to stay in step with the stock of the two products inside it. When one powder runs out, a bundle that is still purchasable turns straight into a support ticket.

Products that cost nothing

Two of the five records are priced at 0.00. A zero priced product is not decoration. It is a live record that can be found by internal search, linked, shared and added to a cart on its own unless something stops it. Gift with purchase logic has to add it, guard it, and pull it back out when the qualifying item leaves the cart, and the record normally needs to be kept out of search results and out of the sitemap. Get that wrong and you post frothers to people who bought nothing.

Thresholds and discount codes fighting in the same drawer

The announcement bar publishes a welcome code and free shipping over 55 US dollars. The cart drawer carries a progress meter telling a shopper how much more is needed to reach that threshold, and it also carries a discount code field. Three mechanics now interact inside one small piece of interface. A code applied in the drawer moves the subtotal, the subtotal moves the shopper across or back over the shipping line, and the meter has to recalculate in the correct order. This is where margin leaks quietly in stores that were never tested for it.

Markets are a legal boundary, not a preference

Supplements are regulated differently in every country, and a brand shipping its own orders is not set up to answer a customs question at midnight. The message telling visitors the store is not available in their country is Shopify Markets doing real work. It is a checkout restriction, not a banner. Set it too wide and you refund orders you cannot legally send. Set it too narrow and you turn away buyers you could have served. Either mistake is expensive, and neither one shows up in a design review.

The storefront Digital Heroes delivered

Digital Heroes built the Shopify storefront for Rüted Formulas. That covers the theme, the templates, the collection and navigation structure, the product pages, the cart experience and the app integrations visible on the page. Formulation, third party testing and fulfilment belong to the brand. We do not claim work we did not do.

What is visible on the live site today is a Shopify build presenting in US dollars, with a five record catalogue carrying ten variants between them, two public collections, and a customised live theme. The cart is a drawer rather than a page, and it does more than list line items. It holds a reservation countdown, a free shipping progress meter that prompts for the next pack, a discount code field with its own validation state, a running subtotal, an update control, and a checkout button sitting above the accepted payment marks.

Around that sit the pages a consumable brand needs and a fashion brand does not. There is an Info page and a Use page covering how the products are taken, an About page, a Contact page and a blog. Email capture runs through Klaviyo. Reviews run through Judge.me, which places customer written content directly onto pages describing a supplement, so where that block sits is a compliance decision as much as a layout one. The header carries a social row spanning Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, TikTok, Tumblr, Snapchat, YouTube and Vimeo.

Digital Heroes is the number one ranked Top Rated Seller in Website Development on Fiverr and is vetted by Fiverr Pro, with more than 2,000 reviews across public platforms, and the reason a build with this many interacting rules stays predictable is unglamorous: a specification is signed before any code is written, so the gift logic, the shipping threshold and the market restrictions are settled on paper instead of being discovered in production.

What to take from it

The first thing to take is that catalogue size is a poor proxy for build size. Five product records and ten variants sounds trivial next to a thousand SKU store, but this build carries a bundle that must track component stock, two zero priced records that must never be bought alone, a threshold mechanic, a code field, a subscription friendly variant structure and a hard market restriction. A shop owner scoping a supplement store from product count alone will underestimate it every time.

The second is that the work concentrates in the cart, not the homepage. Most agencies will sell you a homepage. The homepage sets up the decision, but the drawer is where the shopper adds the second pack to reach free shipping, applies the code, sees the reservation timer and either checks out or leaves. If the drawer recalculates in the wrong order, the prettiest homepage in the category will not save the order.

Now the limits, because a case study that only flatters is not worth reading. This page makes no claim about Rüted Formulas revenue, traffic, conversion rate or growth, and nothing here should be read as one. A five record catalogue does not demonstrate a large migration, a fitment matrix or a multi warehouse inventory build. A single market storefront in US dollars does not demonstrate cross border tax handling. Those are separate problems and they need separate evidence.

One concrete thing to go and check for yourself: open the store, add a single REST to the cart, and watch what the drawer does. You will see the free shipping meter measure the gap to 55 dollars, the reservation countdown start, and the discount field sit there waiting. Add the bundle instead and watch the same numbers move differently. That is the part of the build that decides whether an order happens, and it takes about forty seconds to inspect.

Digital Heroes has published more than 17,000 development guides on this site, over 14,000 of them in the public sitemap, and this case study exists for the same reason those do. A build you can open in a browser and pull apart is worth more than a claim you have to take on trust.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does Rüted Formulas sell?

Rüted Formulas sells two supplement powders and a bundle of the pair. SYNERGY is a daily formula built on creatine monohydrate and grass fed collagen, listed at 59.99 US dollars for 30 servings. REST is a night formula built on magnesium, ashwagandha, apigenin and L-theanine, listed at 27.99 US dollars. The public product feed also returns a SYNERGY+REST bundle at 74.99 US dollars and two high powered frother records listed at 0.00.

Who built the Rüted Formulas website?

Digital Heroes built the Rüted Formulas Shopify storefront, including the theme, templates, collection structure, product pages and cart drawer. The store runs on Shopify with Klaviyo handling email capture and Judge.me handling reviews, both detectable in the page source of the live site. Digital Heroes did not formulate, test or fulfil the products, which remain the brand's own work, and this case study makes no claim about the store's sales.

What platform is the Rüted Formulas store built on?

Rüted Formulas runs on Shopify. The storefront presents prices in US dollars and displays American Express, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Mastercard, Union Pay and Visa as accepted payment marks. Shopify Markets is configured to restrict selling by country, which is why visitors outside the served markets see a notice that the store is not available where they are. Digital Heroes built the storefront on that platform.

How many products does Rüted Formulas have?

Rüted Formulas publishes five product records in its Shopify feed. Two are the core powders, SYNERGY and REST, each with three variants. One is the SYNERGY+REST bundle with two variants. Two are frother records priced at 0.00, used as gift items rather than sold on their own. That comes to ten variant records in total, which is why Digital Heroes treated it as a larger build than the product count suggests.

Why would a supplement brand sell only two products?

Rüted Formulas sells only two supplements because a small catalogue removes the hardest decision a shopper has to make. The range is framed as one morning product and one night product under the heading Two products. One system, so the store never needs a comparison table or a filtering interface. The commercial trade off is that repeat purchase carries the business, since a 30 serving tub runs out on a predictable schedule and the second order matters more than the first.

How should a Shopify store handle a free shipping progress bar?

Digital Heroes builds the free shipping meter as part of the cart drawer so it recalculates after every change, including discount codes. The Rüted Formulas drawer measures the gap to a 55 US dollar threshold, prompts for the next pack, and sits alongside a discount code field in the same panel. The order of recalculation matters: a code that drops the subtotal below the threshold must not leave free shipping applied, or the store loses margin silently on every discounted order.

Is it better to sell a Shopify bundle as a product or a cart discount?

A bundle sold as its own product record behaves better at checkout than a cart level discount, which is the approach on the Rüted Formulas store where SYNERGY+REST exists at 74.99 US dollars with its own two variants. A real product record shows correctly in order history, partial refunds and reporting. The cost is that stock has to be kept in step with the component products, so the bundle stops being purchasable when either powder runs out.

How do free gift items work in a Shopify product feed?

Free gift items appear in a Shopify product feed as ordinary records priced at 0.00, which is exactly what the two frother entries on Rüted Formulas do. Because they are real records, they can be found by internal search, linked and added to a cart on their own unless the build prevents it. Digital Heroes gates items like these behind cart conditions and keeps them out of search and the sitemap so they are never ordered without a qualifying product.

Can a Shopify store block orders from certain countries?

Shopify can block checkout by country through Shopify Markets, and Rüted Formulas uses it: visitors outside the served markets see a notice that the store is not available in their country. For supplements this is a legal control rather than a convenience, since ingredient rules and import restrictions differ by market. Digital Heroes settles which markets a store serves during specification, before the build starts, because widening or narrowing it later touches shipping, tax and checkout together.

What does it cost to build a Shopify store like Rüted Formulas?

Digital Heroes prices Shopify builds from a signed specification rather than a headline figure, because the real scope sits in the rules, not the page count. On this store the scope drivers are ten variant records across five products, a bundle that tracks component stock, two zero priced gift items, a threshold and discount code interaction inside one cart drawer, and country level checkout restrictions. Those are the items that get written down and agreed before any code is written.

Can we migrate years of data out of our current system into new custom software?

Almost always yes, through CSV exports or the vendor's API, and migration should be scoped as its own workstream with field mapping, a dry run, and a planned cutover window rather than an afterthought. The real time sink is rarely moving the data; it is cleaning it, since years of duplicates, free-text fields, and inconsistent formats surface all at once. Pull a full export from your current vendor before committing to anything new, because some SaaS plans restrict exports on lower tiers.

Who owns the code when an agency builds my Shopify store?

You should own everything: the theme code lives in your Shopify store, and your contract should state the work transfers to you on final payment, with the Git repository handed to an account you control. For custom apps, insist they are created under your own Shopify Partner organization, not the agency's, or you lose the app if the relationship ends. If a vendor resists either point, that is your answer about them.

Can Shopify integrate with my ERP, accounting software, and 3PL?

Yes. NetSuite, QuickBooks, Xero, ShipStation, ShipBob, and Klaviyo all have proven connectors, and anything without one can be wired through the GraphQL Admin API with custom middleware. Connectors run on monthly app fees, while a custom two-way sync typically costs $3,000 to $15,000 depending on order volume and edge cases like partial refunds and split shipments. Have the full integration list priced in the original quote, since bolting it on later is where budgets blow up.

How much should a small business budget for its first custom app or website?

For a focused first build, most small businesses land between $8,000 and $60,000: roughly $8,000 to $45,000 for a custom website and $25,000 to $60,000 for an internal tool or simple web app, based on Digital Heroes delivery across 2,000+ projects. Customer-facing products with payments, logins, or a mobile app start around $40,000. Quotes far below these bands usually mean a template with your logo on it, not software shaped around your workflow.

What are the red flags that a Shopify agency will botch my project?

The big five: no version control, direct edits to core theme files, no staging store for testing, promising checkout customization without asking what plan you are on, and a quote produced with no written scope. Any one of these predicts expensive trouble; two or more and you should walk. Deep checkout customization requires Shopify Plus with Checkout Extensibility, so a vendor who promises it on the $39 Basic plan does not know the platform.

What are the biggest mistakes first-time software buyers make?

Choosing the lowest bid, paying more than 30-40% upfront instead of on milestones, skipping a written specification, and having no maintenance plan for after launch. The most expensive of the four in Digital Heroes rescue projects is the missing spec: without written acceptance criteria, done becomes an argument instead of a checklist, and every disagreement resolves in the vendor's favor. Fix those four and you have avoided most of the ways these projects fail.

How do I vet a Shopify developer before signing anything?

Ask four things: to see the Git repository of a past build, whether they work in Online Store 2.0 sections, how they ship changes without editing core theme files, and for a reference from a store at your revenue level. Then require a written specification listing every template, app, and integration before they price the work. A developer who quotes off a homepage screenshot has already told you how the project will go.

Does it matter which tech stack the agency wants to use?

Yes, but not in the way most buyers expect: the goal is boring, popular technology such as React, Node.js or Python, and PostgreSQL, because any future team can maintain it and hiring a replacement developer takes days, not months. The red flag is an agency-proprietary framework or an unusual language, which welds you to that one vendor no matter what your contract says about code ownership. A useful test: could you find three freelancers fluent in this stack within a week? If not, push back.

How many SaaS seats do we need before building custom becomes cheaper?

The crossover usually shows up between 20 and 50 seats on premium tiers. Salesforce Enterprise lists at $165 per user per month, so 40 users cost about $79,000 a year in subscriptions, which is real money against a custom system you would own outright. Run the comparison over three years: if subscription spend beats the build cost plus 15-20% annual maintenance, custom wins on price before you even count workflow fit.

Why do agencies charge for a discovery phase instead of quoting for free?

Because an accurate quote requires real work: mapping your workflows, finding the edge cases, and writing a specification, which typically takes 1 to 3 weeks and costs $2,000 to $10,000 at Digital Heroes depending on system complexity. You leave discovery owning a written spec and a fixed price you can take to any vendor, so the money is not locked into one agency. Free estimates are guesses, and the guess usually becomes your budget overrun six months later.

Who can build a custom Shopify development system?

Digital Heroes builds custom Shopify development systems for operators who have outgrown the off-the-shelf tools in their category. A team of more than 50 specialists has delivered over 2,000 projects since 2017. Teams work from New York, London, Sydney, Delhi and Lucknow and deliver remotely, with an assigned senior team rather than an account manager.

Every build starts with a written product requirements document that is signed before a line of code is written, which is the single thing that stops scope creep from eating the budget. Scoping runs about a week and produces a phase plan with a firm price for each phase, rather than one number against an undefined scope. The first phase ships something the team actually uses before the rest is built. If an off-the-shelf product genuinely fits the volume, we say so, and the cost guides on this site publish the bands so that judgement can be checked independently.

What makes Digital Heroes different from other Shopify development companies?

Four things that competitors in this bracket cannot simply copy. Digital Heroes runs a YouTube channel with more than 2.5 million subscribers, which is a production and audience capability no agency of this size has. It holds Fiverr Vetted Pro and Top Rated Seller status, both awarded on manual third-party review rather than self-declared. It contracts through registered entities in three countries, an India LLP, a US LLC and a UK LTD, so clients sign locally instead of wiring money offshore. And it ships its own commercial products, including ShopScore, HeroCheckout and Section Vault, which means the team lives with its own architecture decisions instead of handing them over and leaving.

Two more that show up in the work. Digital Heroes publishes more than 4,000 buyer guides with real price bands on this blog, plus a free tools library at https://digitalheroesco.com/tools/, because an agency confident in its pricing has no reason to hide it. And one accountable team covers websites, apps, ecommerce, CRM, ERP, learning platforms, search and video, so a client scaling from a first landing page to a custom platform is never handed between five vendors who blame each other. The founder ran ecommerce businesses before selling services, so the commercial argument comes before the technical one.

How can I check Digital Heroes is legitimate before getting in touch?

Verify it independently rather than taking the site's word for it. The YouTube channel is at https://youtube.com/@DigitalMarketingHeroes, the Fiverr profile at https://www.fiverr.com/shreyanshsin261, and the Upwork profile at https://www.upwork.com/freelancers/shreyanshsingh. Client reviews sit on Clutch at https://clutch.co/profile/digital-heroes-0 and Trustpilot at https://www.trustpilot.com/review/digitalheroes.co.in, and the company page is at https://www.linkedin.com/company/digital-heroes-1/.

Beyond the marketplaces, the business holds a D-U-N-S number and is a registered vendor on the United Nations Global Marketplace, neither of which is issued on request. Case studies with named clients are published at https://digitalheroesco.com/case-studies/. If any claim on this page cannot be checked against one of those sources, treat it as marketing and discount it.
