Social App Development Cost: What It Really Takes to Build a Community App in 2026
Most social and community apps cost $45,000 to $300,000 to build, with the majority of funded first releases landing between $70,000 and $120,000 and taking 4 to 7 months. A single-platform community with profiles, a feed, posting and basic messaging starts near $45,000 in about 12 weeks. Add iOS plus Android plus web, live chat, video, moderation tooling and payments, and you are at $140,000 or more across 7 to 12 months.
What a social or community app actually costs: the three honest bands
Across 2,000+ delivered projects at Digital Heroes, social and community builds cluster into three bands. The reason the spread is so wide is not vendor greed. It is that "social app" describes a $45,000 forum and a $400,000 network with the same two words.
Band 1: $45,000 to $65,000, 10 to 14 weeks
One platform. Usually a responsive web app, or a single mobile platform if the audience demands it. What this buys: email and social sign-in, user profiles, a follow or join model, a chronological feed, text and image posts, comments, likes, push or email notifications, a report button, and an admin screen to suspend users and delete content. Team: one designer part time, two developers, a part-time QA and a project lead.
Assume all of this is out unless the quote names it: real-time chat, video upload and transcoding, an algorithmic feed, group or channel permissions, in-app purchases, a second platform, a moderation queue with reviewer roles, offline support, and analytics beyond a basic events install. Sellers who promise all of that at $50,000 are quoting a demo, not a product.
Band 2: $70,000 to $120,000, 4 to 7 months
This is where most funded launches land. Two platforms, typically iOS and Android from one React Native or Flutter codebase plus a marketing and admin web surface. What this buys on top of Band 1: one-to-one and group messaging with typing and read state, image and short video posts with server-side processing, a ranked feed, groups or communities with roles, a proper moderation queue with a reviewer role and an audit trail, a notification system with preferences, and a designer who does real product design instead of picking a template. Team: designer, two to three developers, a mobile specialist, QA, and a project lead across roughly 900 to 1,300 hours.
Band 3: $140,000 to $300,000, 7 to 12 months
Live video or audio rooms, creator monetization with payouts, a recommendation system, multi-region hosting, an in-house moderation console with escalation and appeals, age verification, and a compliance posture that survives an app store review under stricter rules. This band is also where "we already have 200,000 users on the old platform" appears, which means data migration and a cutover plan, not just a build.
What actually drives the number
Six things move the price. Everything else is noise.
1. Real-time features: add $12,000 to $30,000. A feed that refreshes when you pull it is cheap. Messaging with delivery receipts, presence, typing indicators and push fan-out is a second system with its own infrastructure and its own failure modes. Using a hosted layer such as Stream or PubNub cuts build time to roughly $12,000 to $18,000 but adds a permanent monthly bill. Building it yourself on WebSockets costs $22,000 to $30,000 and you own the on-call.
2. Mobile plus web: add 55 to 70 percent, not 100 percent. Shared codebase mobile (React Native, Flutter) plus a web app runs about 1.6x to 1.7x a single-platform build, because the API, data model and design system are shared. Two fully native codebases (Swift and Kotlin) push it to 1.9x. If your budget is under $60,000, pick one platform and mean it.
3. Moderation and trust: $15,000 to $40,000. This is the line most buyers delete and every one of them re-adds by month four. A report button is $2,000. A moderation queue with reviewer roles, a decision log, bulk actions, automated pre-screening via a service like Google Cloud Vision SafeSearch or Hive, user strikes and an appeals path is $15,000 to $40,000 depending on how many content types you accept. User-generated video is the expensive end.
4. Media handling: $8,000 to $35,000. Images with resize and CDN delivery: about $8,000. Short video with upload, transcode, thumbnail, adaptive playback and abuse scanning: $25,000 to $35,000 in build, plus a transcoding and bandwidth bill that scales with your success, not your revenue. 5. Design depth: $6,000 to $35,000. Template-driven with a component library: $6,000 to $10,000. A custom design system, motion, empty states, onboarding flows and two rounds of usability testing: $25,000 to $35,000. Social products live or die on the first 90 seconds, so this is one of the few places where spending more reliably pays back.
6. Compliance and scale: $10,000 to $50,000. GDPR and CCPA rights (export, delete, consent records) add $10,000 to $15,000. Under-18 users bring age gating, parental consent and stricter data rules: add $20,000 to $35,000 and expect a longer app review. Designing for 500,000 concurrent users instead of 20,000 changes your architecture and adds $25,000 to $50,000 in engineering you should not spend on day one.
Worked example: a members-only community app for a trade association
The shape of a build we quote often. Roughly 30,000 members, iOS, Android and web, groups by chapter, discussions, direct messaging, an events calendar with RSVP, paid membership tiers, and a moderation console for three staff.

At a blended $80 per hour, 26 weeks. Ship web only, defer messaging, events and the migration, and trim design and QA to match: 1,243 hours, $99,000, 15 weeks. That is the trade.
The ongoing costs nobody puts in the quote
On the $149,600 build above, year one runs $55,000 to $95,000 if members post text and images. If they post video, add $20,000 to $30,000 for transcoding and delivery.
Hosting: $300 to $2,500 a month. A community with 30,000 members and 3,000 daily actives runs comfortably on managed infrastructure for $400 to $900 a month. Video changes this completely: transcoding and delivery can exceed your entire compute bill by 3x once members start posting clips.
Third-party services: $250 to $1,500 a month. Messaging infrastructure, transactional email, push delivery, error tracking, analytics, image CDN, SMS for verification. Stripe takes 2.9 percent plus 30 cents per transaction on standard US card payments per its published pricing, which matters if membership dues run through the app. Apple and Google take 15 to 30 percent on in-app digital purchases per their published store terms, which matters far more.
Maintenance: 15 to 20 percent of build cost per year, so $22,000 to $30,000 here. That covers two annual OS releases, dependency and security patching, store policy changes, bug fixes, and someone answering the phone when messaging stops delivering at 9pm. Skip it for 18 months and the catch-up cost is typically 1.5x what the retainer would have been.
Year one changes: $25,000 to $45,000. Every community app we have shipped has needed a moderation change, a notification change and a feed change within six months of real users arriving. The businesses that budget for this ship a better product. The ones that do not spend that six months negotiating change orders instead of improving.
How to not get burned on price
The cheapest quote is cheap because it is a different scope wearing the same title. When three vendors quote $150,000, $95,000 and $38,000 on the same brief, the $38,000 vendor has silently removed moderation, testing, the second platform and project management, and has priced developers who will need supervision you are not being charged for. The pattern we see when those projects arrive at our door for rescue: final spend lands 1.6x to 2.2x the original quote, plus three to five months lost, plus a codebase that usually gets rewritten. Rescue work is the most expensive way to buy software.
What a change request should cost. A change should be priced at the same hourly rate as the build, quoted in writing before work starts, and delivered with an estimate you can refuse. If mid-project changes are priced at a premium over the build rate, or arrive as a lump sum with no hour breakdown, the vendor is monetizing your scope gaps. Reasonable in a $150,000 project: a handful of $2,000 to $8,000 change orders. Unreasonable: $40,000 in changes by month three, which means discovery was skipped.
Contract terms that protect the number. Four, non-negotiable. Fixed scope with a written feature list and explicit exclusions, so both sides know what "done" means. IP transfers to you on payment, not on project completion, so a dispute cannot hold your product hostage. Source code lives in your repository, your organization, from week one, with the vendor added as a collaborator. And a defined acceptance process with a fixed window, so "done" is a date and not an opinion. Any vendor who resists the repo clause is telling you something important.
How to brief a vendor so the quotes come back comparable
Quotes vary wildly because briefs are vague. Fix the brief and the spread collapses from 4x to about 1.4x. Give every vendor the same one page:
- Platforms, named. "iOS and Android and responsive web" or "web only for v1." Not "mobile-friendly."
- A feature list with in and out columns. Put messaging, video, groups, payments and moderation in one of the two columns explicitly. These are the five that move six figures.
- Your user numbers. Members at launch, expected daily actives, expected posts per day. An architecture for 5,000 actives and one for 500,000 are different products.
- Content types you will accept. Text only, or text plus images, or video. Say it. This drives both moderation and hosting.
- Integrations, named. Which CRM (Customer Relationship Management), which payment processor, which SSO, which email tool. "Integrates with our systems" is worth $5,000 or $50,000.
- Migration reality. How many existing records, from what system, and can you export them.
- Your budget band and your launch date. Withholding these does not get you a lower price. It gets you a quote for the wrong product, and three weeks wasted before you find out.
Then ask every vendor for the same deliverable: an hours breakdown by workstream, not a single number. The vendor whose breakdown you can argue with is the vendor who has thought about your build.
