A partner in the industrials practice calls a chief technology officer about a chief operating officer role. Problem 3: assessment has to be structured or the client report is an opinion
A retained search sells judgement. The evidence for that judgement is a competency specification agreed with the client, interviews conducted against it, references taken and a written assessment. In most firms the specification is a Word document, the interview notes are in an email, and the report is assembled by hand for each candidate at the end.

How to choose a developer for search firm software
Ask them to model a person who has held four roles at three companies and is currently on garden leave. If their data model has a single company field on the person, market mapping will never work and off limits checks will evaluate against stale employment.
